Parent-Teacher Conference Tips for Parents
A conference is a short conversation, so a little preparation goes a long way. Use the checklists below before, during and after your meeting to make the most of the time with your child's teacher.
Before the conference
- Look over recent report cards, tests and homework so you can point to specific work.
- Ask your child what they enjoy and what feels hard right now — bring their words with you.
- Write down your top two or three concerns; conferences are usually 10–20 minutes.
- Note anything happening at home that could affect school: a move, illness, sleep or screen habits.
- Check whether the meeting is in person, by phone or online, and join a few minutes early.
Questions to ask the teacher
- How is my child doing compared with the expectations for this grade?
- What are their strongest skills, and where do they struggle most?
- How do they behave in class — do they participate, ask for help, work with others?
- Is homework being turned in on time and at the expected quality?
- What one thing should we practise at home over the next month?
- Are there school programs, tutoring or support services we should look into?
- What is the best way to reach you between conferences?
After the conference
- Write a short summary while it is fresh, including anything you agreed to try.
- Share the positives with your child first, then one clear goal to work on.
- Put the agreed next step somewhere visible — a reading time, a homework checklist, a bedtime.
- Email the teacher in a few weeks with a quick progress update or question.
- Book a follow-up conference if a concern is unresolved rather than waiting for the next term.
